  • Amazon's Kindle Have you seen Amazon's Kindle?

The Kindle is an electronic reading device. It is the size of a very thin book and can electronically hold more than 200 books, magazines and newspapers. You can wake up and have the paper automatically delivered to your Kindle. You meet a friend for lunch....discuss a good book....and within minutes have the full books sent to your Kindle. Books are about 65% off regular print prices. You can even sent word documents to your Kindle!

My mind is racing with all of the possibilities on how this will help my life!

I was going to add the Kindle to my Christmas List but fearing my husband would not take me seriously, I instead ordered one and had it shipped. I had it holiday wrapped with a card that says:

To the Best Wife and Mom…From Your Loving Husband and Kids.

For the first time in a long time, I can hardly wait for Christmas Morning!

  • Common Candle Questions How to Administer a Burn Test

Trim wick to 1/4". Place candle on clean, flat, heat resistant surface - away from drafts. Record time & light candle. After 2 hours, record burn pool diameter and wick appearance. After a total of 4 hours, again record burn pool diameter and wick appearance and then gently blow out candle. Allow candle to cool for 8 hours. Repeat process until all of the wax is gone.

Note: Candle should achieve desired burn at 2 hour check. The wax should not be more than 1/2" deep at 4 hour check. If either of these occurs, you need to adjust the size of your wick.

Calculating How Much Wax a Container Will Hold

Fill the container with water and use the below conversion that applies to the wax you are using.
    • 16 oz of weighed Paraffin Wax = 20 fluid oz
    • 16 oz of weighed Soy Wax = 18 fluid oz
    Pillar or Votive Candle Cracks

    1. If performing a second pour, make sure the re-pour wax is not too hot. This will cause thermal shock and candle cracks.
    2. Candle may have cooled too quickly causing cracks or mottling.
    3. Use only quality fragrance oils that have not been diluted to improve cost. This can cause wax to mottle.
    4. Prior pouring, make sure the mold is clean and free of old wax.
Pillar or Votive is Difficult to Unmold
    1. Do not re-pour candle after it has become cool and started to pull away from the mold.
    2. Make sure mold is clean and in good condition.
    3. As a last resort, put the candle (and mold) in the freezer for 5 minutes. This will cause the wax to shrink and pull away from the mold.
    Candle Flame is Too Large

Your wick is likely too large. Using the appropriate size and type of wick is fundamental to a well burning candle.

    Candle Flame is Too Small

Your wick may be too small. Using the appropriate size and type of wick is fundamental to a well burning candle.

    Pit Marks on Candle
    1. Pour slowly and use minimal stirring to avoid the creation of bubbles.
    2. Prior to pouring, ensure your mold is clear and free from residual wax.
    3. Pit marks can happen when a candle takes too long to cool.
Poor Candle Throw (Can’t Smell Scent)
    1. Try using a higher quality fragrance oil. Often fragrances smell good out of the bottle but lack the depth to create a candle with a good "hot throw" (smell while burning) and a good "cold throw" (smell while cold).
    2. Try adding fragrance just prior to pouring candle.
    3. Try adding more fragrance (do not exceed wax recommendations).
    4. Try changing waxes. All wax formulas perform differently.
    Container Candle Sink Hole
    1. Immediately prior to pouring candles, carefully warm containers in the over at 150º for 15 minutes. This will allow the wax to cool very slowly thus lessening the changes of sink holes.
    2. Do you heat the wax beyond the pouring temperature? Overheating causes the wax to over expand.
    3. Make sure you candle cools slowly. Avoid drafts in the room.
    4. Visible Horizontal Lines
    5. When pouring a second time, make sure your wax is not too cool.
    6. When doing a second pour, retain some wax from your first pour and use this reheated wax as your second pour. This ensures the color of the two waxes will be exactly the same.
    7. Lower your pouring temperature.

    Wholesale Supplies Plus

    Ingredients:
    Soap Mold of Choice
    1/2 oz Liquid Glycerin
    4 teaspoons Bentonite Clay
1/2 Teaspoon Tea Tree Essential Oil
1/2 Teaspoon Lavender 40/42 Essential Oil
1 lb. Crafters Choice Sweetened Honey Soap Base

    Equipment:
    Double Boiler
    Measuring Spoons
    Mixing Spoons

    Directions:
Melt soap in double boiler. Stir until fully melted. Remove from heat. Add essential oils. With a spoon and in a separate cup, mix glycerin and clay until smooth. Pour mixture into heated soap. Pour soap into molds of choice and allow to harden as directed. To package, wrap in inexpensive plastic wrap (it stretches better) and place in a soap box.

Tea Tree Facts: Tea tree oil has been recognized as a potent antiseptic in Australia anecdotally for much longer than there has been scientific evidence. Recent studies support a role for tea tree oil in skin care and treatment of various ailments. Tea tree oil is a known antifungal agent.

Honey Facts: For at least 2700 years, honey has been used to treat a variety of ailments through topical application, but only recently have the antiseptic and antibacterial properties of honey been chemically explained. As an antimicrobial agent honey may have the potential for treating a variety of ailments. One New Zealand researcher says a particular type of honey may be useful in treating MRSA. Antibacterial properties of honey are the result of the low water activity causing osmosis, hydrogen peroxide effect, and high acidity.

    Double Boiler
    Measuring Spoons

    Directions
Melt soap. Add fragrance. Grind oatmeal and add. Stir well and pour into molds. When hard, unmold and package as desired. I have always found that a cello bag with raffia tie makes a nice wrap.

Note: The plastic beaker is a great mold because the soap easily unmolds and then the finished bar fits nicely in your hand. If you pour the soap a little hotter, you get a nice fall out of oatmeal. This is good because it produces a soapy side and a scrubby side to the bar.

Colloidal Oatmeal Facts: Oatmeal binds to the skin and creates an adherent barrier that is thought to protect the skin from harmful substances. The hydrated granules of oatmeal adhere to the surface of the skin and provide a protective film attracting humidity and reducing friction. It has been used in Egypt since 2,000 BC for its beautifying effects. It is used in the US and Northern Europe for natural moisturizing properties and to alleviate itching. Colloidal oatmeal is very fine and designed for cosmetics. It is a soft powder. It is designed to make a milk bath instead of floating to the bottom like oatmeal you would cook.

    Ingredients
    1 ½ cups Citric Acid
    3 Cups Baking Soda
    2 teaspoons Shea Butter
    2 teaspoons Dreamsicle FO 228
4 drops Citric Orange Liquid Color
    Candy Lollipop Sticks

    Equipment
    Large glass mixing bowl
Fine Mist Spray Bottle of Rubbing Alcohol
    12 Plastic Beakers

    Directions
Melt shea butter in microwave and set aside. In a large mixing bowl, combine citric acid and baking soda. Add shea butter, fragrance and color. Mix well. Heavily spray mixture with rubbing alcohol. Mix well. Continue the alcohol “spray and mix” procedure until mixture begins to stick together. Fill plastic beaker with mixture, patting down as you go until about ¾ full. We found that it was easier to put an empty beaker in the filling beaker and press. This gave a nice firm press without air pockets. Fill cups until ¾ full. Take one lollipop stick and push into the center of the pop. Let harden overnight. When hard, it is ready to unmold. Press firmly on the bottom of the beaker and product will pop right out. Package as desired. We used a cello bag and ribbon.
Instruct user that product is not edible and lollipop stick should be discarded.

    #1 Red Candle Color Block
    4 Low Smoke Votive Wicks

    Utensils
    Wax Melting Pot
    Spoon
    Candy Thermometer
    Measuring Cup
    4 Round Votive Cups

    Directions
In a dedicated wax melting pot, melt wax. (Note: Never leave wax unattended as it will flash fire before it will boil) While melting, cover work surface with newspaper. Set votive cups on newspaper. Place wick in bottom of votive cup. This wick has a large self centering tab. Do not glue gun it to the bottom of the votive cup. Once wax reaches the temperature of 170ºF, add fragrance. Raise temperature back to 175ºF. Pour 1/3 of wax into votive cups.

Add color to remaining wax in melting pot. Raise temperature back to 175ºF. Once a fine skin begins to form on already poured wax in votive cup, carefully pour red wax into votive cup. Allow to cool. Wax shrinks significantly upon cooling and this should allow votive to fall out of cup.

Package in cello bag with a votive candle warning label.

  • Peppermint Rolls & Twists
I found this recipe in our archives and had fun teaching some of the newer staff how to make it. I thought you might enjoy it.

    Ingredients:
1 lb. Crafter's Choice Clear Soap
1 lb. Crafter's Choice White Soap
1 oz. Crafter's Choice Double Mint Fragrance
Crafter's Choice Ocean Blue Liquid Color
    6 Tablespoons Liquid Glycerin

    Equipment:
    Double Boiler
    Spatula
    Measuring Spoons
    Mixing Spoon
    Jelly Roll Pan
Fine Mist Bottle of Standard Rubbing Alcohol

    Directions:
Melt clear soap. Add 1/2 ounce fragrance, 3 Tablespoons of glycerin and 4-6 drops of color. Pour soap into jelly roll pan. Tilt jelly roll pan so that soap becomes evenly distributed. Allow to cool until firm to touch.

While clear soap is cooling, melt white soap. Add 1/2 ounce fragrance and 3 Tablespoons of glycerin. Allow soap to cool for 3-5 minutes and the mix one final time.

Spritz colored soap with a fine mist of rubbing alcohol. Be generous. Rubbing alcohol allows layered soap to stick together. Pour white soap over colored soap. Note: To prevent melting of the bottom layer, constantly move your pouring location. Tilt jelly roll pan so that soap becomes evenly distributed.

Allow soap to cool. Cut in strips and tightly roll. Note: Do not spritz with Rubbing Alcohol before rolling. This will ruin your project.

I find it best to roll away from myself while providing a firm downward pressure. Cut rolls into candy like pieces. Cut a few strips for twists. For the rolls, I find that it helps to press the roll together while turning. This helps the rolled layers to adhere.

Pictured here is variation of the above recipe...packaged with cello wrap and ribbon.

  • Simplicity Can Be Best
I recently received this Origins gift set. I have always loved Origins and this sampler is a great gift because it allowed me to try products that I would not normally purchase.

What struck me most about this gift set is the simplicity. It is simple a fabric covered box with filled with crinkle paper and products. It came wrapped in a paper cigar style band (not pictured). The products were not arranged in any special manner.

I can imagine this concept being adapted to so many product lines. I have always felt that if you provide gift packaging....it can double sales!

  • Soap Melters If you are like many soap makers, this time of year means working very long days. You may be surprised to hear that it is an ideal time to look at improving production efficiencies. Since “show season” tends to improve cash flow, it is often a good time to invest in equipment….especially if that equipment means doubling production or eliminating the need for hiring staff.

Yesterday, I talked about Shrink Wrap Systems. Today, I want to introduce “Water Jacket” Melters.

A “Water Jacket Melter” circulates heated, temperature controlled water for the purpose of melting a base in the inner tank…much like a double boiler. A water jacket melter can melt a 24 pound block of MP Soap Base in as little as 2 hours. No need to cut the block…just drop it in whole! This saves a tremendous amount of time and energy.

If you melt both white and clear soap, I recommend two melters. Often the titanium dioxide (used to make white soap white) gets caught in the pouring spout and cloud clear soap. To prevent soap discoloration, you will NOT want to set the melter over 135ºF and you DO NOT want the soap to be heated longer than 4 hours.

For one of our Big Blocks of MP Soap, I recommend this Water Jacket Melter 120. (Block dimensions are 13.5” x 12” x 6”) Currently, the melters are on sale and you can save $200.

If you would like to share, I would love to hear the ways you have improved production efficiencies. Just click on the comment button and share!

  • Shrink Wrap Systems

A Professional Shrink Wrap System is a great packaging option for "high production" soap makers. The time is saves can add up to real dollars!

Two years ago I met Art Marko of National Shrink Wrap at the Handcrafted Soapmakers Guild Conference in Portland, Oregon. It was my pleasure to see him again last year.

The nice thing about Art is that when you buy from him.....you are buying direct from the manufacturer. If you have equipment replacement needs or special requirements...he is the one to help you. He has been in the shrink wrap business for over 30 years.

I have included Art's instructional soap shrink wrap video for your review. Click the forward arrow to watch the demonstration. Wrapping 24 bars in less than one minute is truly amazing!

    video

If you have an expanding business or you feel like you no longer do it all, I highly encourage you to look into a Professional Shrink Wrap System! His Package Master 18 is the most popular among soapmakers.

On the other hand, if you are seeking shrink wrap bags that do not require equipment and instead only a hair dryer for shrinking…check out the bags at Wholesale Supplies Plus!

  • Price Drop - Essential Oils We are excited to announce that we have made many changes to our line of pure essential oils. These changes have prompted an immediate price discount on all essential oils we carry.

    The changes include:

    1. We have eliminated the 12 and 25 pound price breaks. This allows us to lower our prices on the smaller "more popular" sizes.
    2. We eliminated the 1/2 oz and 1 oz essential oil sizes. These sizes are very costly to bottle and eliminating them has allowed better efficiency and lower overall costs.
    3. Not all refiners are the same and we do not believe in switching refiners/importers based on price fluctuations yet there is pressure to lower prices on several very popular essential oils. We sampled several essential oils that were from "lower cost" refiners and found them to be aromatically a bit different...good...but different. Instead of eliminating our traditional refiners, we have added the "low cost" oils to our line. These low cost essential oils are 100% pure and not diluted.
    4. Essential oils are a commodity. Our new lower prices mean that when our costs change, our internet price will change also.

  • What's Your Story?

Today I bought this beautiful pendant the artist named "Berried". This piece is a spoon that has been recycled and artistically enhanced to become a beautiful piece of jewelry. All pieces retail for $80-95 each. Not cheap by any means!

As I was trying to decide on if I should splurge on this beautiful piece of art, I surfed the artists site and was suddenly reminded how a sharing a passionate story can help customers identify and connect...thus resulting in a sale.

In this case SpoonFed Art is handmade by a woman (Karin) that found her passion while fashioning spoons as a means of therapy for an eating disorder. In 2004 she left the corporate banking industry and launched her business. Sales from her handmade jewelry now helps support herself as well as the National Eating Disorders Association.

My guess is we all have a story. I think it is natural to want to keep some stories private....but "sharing a little" can mean a lot to customers.

  • The Smell of Smoke
    Thoughts for the day:

Body products, candle wax and especially plastic packaging will absorb the aroma of cigarette smoke and this aroma will negatively effect your sales or in the case of an Internet buyer....a resale.

The majority of non smokers are offended by cigarette smoke and can smell it a mile away while most smokers cannot smell their own cigarette smoke.

Non smokers do not want gifts or products that smell like smoke.

If you are a smoker and want to improve your sales or product presentation, find a place to manufacture and store your products that has absolutely no exposure to cigarette smoke. Rubbermaid containers and plastic bags do not work....cigarette smoke will enter these containers because they do not have an airtight seal.

  • My Birthday

My birthday is next week and I will be 43....not as hard as 40....but not as easy as 21!

I have always loved this song. I hope the auto play doesn't drive you nuts. This video upload thing is new to me and have not figured out how to disable the autoplay.

My goal this year will be to take time to enjoy each moment. Sometimes it is so easy to get caught up in business. Before you know it....I will be 100!

  • Etsy - Online Selling Have you noticed that many "handmade" items at craftshows or on Ebay are not really handmade at all. I spent 5 hours this weekend looking for handmade Thanksgiving decorations and only found things "Made in China" with "US Glitter" hand applied. Sorry...this is not handmade in my book.

I did recently find this new online marketplace that ONLY supports those selling handmade. It is called Etsy. Their vision is to build a new economy and present a better choice: Buy, Sell, and Live Handmade.

If you are seeking to get started selling online, check out Etsy. I myself bought several awesome birthday gifts this weekend...paying with PayPal.

As a seller, I am told the fees are much lower than Ebay and setting up a store is free.
Here is a link to their fee schedule.

  • Getty Images We heard from two customers this week that Getty Images is currently monitoring our industry and sending out letters requesting payment for unauthorized use of photos. One person had two unauthorized photos on her site and was billed for $2,600. She was shocked because she "borrowed" them from another persons site and had permission from that site owner to use them.

If you are seeking high quality, inexpensive, professional photos…..we highly recommend using iStock.com The price on iStock varies but most photos are about $1.25 each.

As a reminder, all photos on the WSP site are copywritten and in most cases, purchased from iStock or Getty Images. They are only authorized for use on the WSP site and her sister sites. You cannot use them for your own website or product labels.
