  • Happy New Year I wanted to take a moment and wish everyone a Happy New Year.

This year we are having about a two dozen neighborhood families over for the evening. The kids will dance, watch movies and play in the basement while the adults have a few drinks and swap stories in the family room. This will be the third year we will hold a New Years Eve Party and it is one of my favorites because it gives us a chance to relax, visit with neighbors and not talk "soap". The best is that no one needs to drive because they all live in the neighborhood. Most people walk.

I will make my usual appetizers but there are three that are so incredibly easy and always gets rave reviews that I wanted to share them with you.

    Aunt Teresa's Famous Cheese Ball

    (2) 8 oz Cream Cheese
    (1) Small Bunch of Green Onion - Chopped
    (1) Jar of Dried Beef - Chopped

Directions: Chop all of green onion and dried beef. (I find it easiest to do the chopping with kitchen scissors.) Mix into cream cheese. Place into clear plastic wrap and form into a ball. Chill for 2 hours. Serve with Crackers.

    Niki's Going...Going...Gone Meatballs

    1.5 lb Lean Ground Beef
    1 Egg
    1 Cup Quaker Oatmeal
    6.5 oz Evaporated Milk
    1/2 teaspoon Garlic Powder
    1 Tablespoon Chili Powder
    1/2 Cup Chopped Onion
    1 Cup Ketchup
    1/4 teaspoon Minced Garlic
    1 Cup Brown Sugar
    1/2 Cup Chopped Sweet Onion
    1 Tablespoon Liquid Smoke Flavoring

Directions: Preheat oven to 350º. Lightly grease 9 x 11 glass baking dish. In a bowl, mix the first 7 ingredients and form into 1" balls. Place them in the baking dish. In a separate bowl, mix remaining ingredients and pour over the meatballs. Bake uncovered for 1 hour at 350º. To serve, leave in baking dish and serve with toothpicks.

    Debbie's Bacon Wrapped Water Chestnuts

    1 lb. Thick Cut Bacon
    (2) 8 oz. Cans of Water Chestnuts - Whole
    1/3 Cup Packed Brown Sugar
    1/3 Cup Mayonnaise
    1/3 Cup Chili Sauce

Directions: Preheat oven to 350º. In a small mixing bowl, combine brown sugar, mayonnaise, and chili sauce. Set this sauce aside for later. Cut each strip of bacon in half. Wrap one strip around one water chestnut. Secure with a wooden toothpick. Place in a shallow glass baking dish. Bake at 350º for 30 minutes. Remove wraps from this baking dish and place them into a second decorative glass/ceramic baking dish. Pour sauce over wraps. Bake at 350º for an additional 30 minutes or until bacon is crispy. Serve hot out of the dish with toothpicks.

    See you next year!

  • My Christmas 2007 My Christmas break started out a little unexpected.....

It was three days before Christmas and our first day off work when I opened my car door and reached for a shopping bag. I painfully tore a tendon in my left lower leg. The good news was that it was not my Achilles tendon (instead the plantaris tendon) and it did not require surgery. I was told to stay off my leg and rest. As it turned out, 2 days of bed rest managed to help me reflect and relax.

We had about 30 people from my side of the family for Christmas Eve. Everyone brought a dish and despite my injury, we managed to have Ham, Turkey, Potatoes, Lasagna, Prime Rib and All of the Fixings. A BIG SHOUT OUT of thanks to my Mom for doing most of the work.

On Christmas Day, the kids woke us up at 8:15am with the delight that Santa made it down the chimney. At our house Santa brings one gift for each child. Our oldest daughter received Bose speakers for her I-Pod, our middle daughter received a 6 foot stuff Caterpillar (perfect for watching TV) and our youngest received Hanna Montana concert tickets. They were all obviously very good this year!

My husband surprised me with Celine Dion tickets (she is coming to Cleveland in September) and I surprised him with a Joshua Cribbs (awesome Cleveland Browns Football Player) Football Jersey. We spent the afternoon serving food at Church to the less fortunate. I spent the evening playing with my Kindle. I bought and downloaded three new books....after I read them...I will let you know if they are worth reading! They are:
    1. Big Book of Small Business - You Don't Have to Run Your Business By the Seat of Your Pants
    2. What Customers Want - Using Outcome Driven Innovation to Create Breakthrough Products and Services
    3. In Search of Excellence - Lessons from America's Best-Run Companies
We rounded out the holiday break hosting my husbands family for Christmas on the 26th. There was about 20 and this year was fun because we decided to skip a formal meal and instead have heavy appetizers. We dusted off the poker chips and played Texas Hold em. The kids played games and before we knew it....evening was here.

We were back to work on the 27th and completed inventory on the 28th. It was amazing the stuff we found, the stuff we thought we had...but didn't. I think we will start doing a mid-year inventory in July. The staff did a great job cleaning, organizing and counting.

The warehouse staff worked on Saturday the 29th getting holiday orders packed and ready for our UPS pick up on 1/2/2008.

It is hard to believe that 2008 is around the corner! I hope the holidays provided you with time to relax, reflect and spend time with loved ones.

  • Honey & Goats Milk Soap A cold process soapmaker gave me this soap idea. I instantly fell in love with it and set out to make it work with melt and pour soap. I hope you like it too!

    Ingredients
2 lb Creamy Goats Milk Soap
    3/4 lb Sweetened Honey Soap
Crafter's Choice 24 Karat Liquid Sparkle Gold
2 1/2 Tbs Honey & Shea Type FO
    Crafter's Choice Short Loaf Mold
    Bubblewrap (with un-popped bubbles)

    Directions
Melt honey soap and fragrance with 1 tablespoon of fragrance. Add gold color until desired level of sparkle is achieved. Pour a small amount of soap in the bottom of your mold. Allow to cool until just warm but still liquid. Place bubblewrap on top of this soap. As the soap hardens, the bubblewrap will stick to it. This is good because it provides the "glue" for the bubblewrap and soap...without this, your bubblewrap will float in your loaf of soap.

Pour remaining honey soap on top of bubble wrap. While cooling, melt goat milk soap and add remaining fragrance. Once the honey soap is ready for the next layer (you can press your finger into the soap but it is not yet completely hard), heavily spritz the honey soap with rubbing alcohol (the rubbing alcohol is what causes your layers to stick together). Pour your goat milk soap into the mold. Allow to completely cool for at least 4 hours. Unmold as usual.

Once loaf is unmolded, remove bubblewrap from loaf. Slice the loaf and package as desired. In our picture, we have sliced the loaf into very thick slices using our straight soap cutter. We then cut those slices in half. I would recommend wrapping in cello wrap and then making a gift tag and tie with natural raffia.

This soap would make a great gift set with out Goats Milk & Honey Lotion!

  • Quick Gift - No Burn Candle Sue (WSP Customer Service) developed this new product. Already this morning, customers wanted the recipe so they could make it for the holidays.

    Ingredients:
    Scented Sachet Beads
    Glitter (color of choice)
    10 oz Glass Apothecary Jar
    Battery Tea Light Candle
    Ribbon or Embellishments

    Directions:
Place sachet beads in a mixing bowl or cup. Add glitter and mix (amount and color of glitter is as desired). Embellish jar with ribbon or raffia. Fill jar with sachet beads. Turn on tea light and place just under the beads.

Notes: Static from mixing causes the glitter to adhere to the beads. This is an ideal jar because it has a wide opening which allows the scent from the sachet beads to escape. If you are planning to make and sell this product at a store, I would suggest a flat glass lid or the dome glass lid with keepsake fitment. In this situation, you could sell the battery operated tea light separately.

  • Lump of Coal Soap Today I didn't get much done. Things just kept coming up. It has been frustrating.

I did manage to get the last of my holiday shopping done. This year 100% of Christmas was purchased online. It not surprising since I have become an Internet junkie.

At Christmas, my husband's family does a "left/right" gift game for the adults. If you haven't played it...it is a blast. Everyone brings a gift (often a gag gift) and puts it in a pile in the family room. The gift is wrapped. When it is time to play the game, everyone gets in a circle and holds a gift (not their own). One person (usually the oldest child not participating) reads a special Night Before Christmas (see below). Whenever "left" or "right" is read, you pass the gift in your hands...in that direction.

I was so excited when I found this lump of coal soap on Etsy. I thought it would be perfect gift for the exchange. I had dreams of getting back the person who gave me the gag gift last year.

Twin Dream Creations offers the bars on Etsy. I love the way the soaps are beveled and polished (with I nylon stocking I suspect).

These soaps bring back memories of when I did craft shows. Santa's Lump of Coal Soap were one of my best December sellers. I made them with Clear MP Soap, Liquid Black Pigment Color and Anise Essential Oil. I packaged mine in the muslin bags we sell. I would pour a bit Rubbermaid container and then bevel away. I must admit...mine NEVER looked as good as the soaps above.

Twas the night RIGHT before Christmas when RIGHT through the house
Not a creature was LEFT stirring, not even a mouse--
The stockings were hung RIGHT by the chimney with care,
in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be RIGHT there.
The children were nestled RIGHT snug in their beds,
while visions of sugarplums danced RIGHT in their heads,
And mama in her kerchief, and I in my cap,
had just settled RIGHT down for a long winter's nap,
When RIGHT out on the LEFT lawn there rose such a clatter,
I sprang RIGHT from my bed to see what was the matter.
    Away to the RIGHT window I LEFT like a flash;
tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
LEFT a luster of midday to objects RIGHT below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
but a miniature sleight and eight tiny reindeer.
    With a little old driver RIGHT lively and quick;
I knew RIGHT in a moment it must be St. Nick.
    More rapid than eagles his coursers they came;
and he whistled and shouted, and called them RIGHT by name:
"Now, Dasher! Now, Dancer! Now, Prancer and Vixen!
On Comet, on Cupid, on Donder and Blitzen!
To the RIGHT top of the porch! To the LEFT top of the wall!
Now dash away, dash away, dash RIGHT away all!"
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly
when they meet RIGHT with an obstacle, mount RIGHT up to the sky,
So up to the housetop the coursers they LEFT flew,
with a sleigh full of toys and St. Nicholas, too.
And then in a twinkling, I heard RIGHT on the roof,
the prancing and pawing of each little RIGHT and LEFT hoof.
As I drew in my head and was turning LEFT around?
down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, RIGHT from his head to his LEFT foot,
and his clothes were all LEFT tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of toys he had flung RIGHT on his back,
and he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
His RIGHT and LEFT eyes, how they twinkled! His dimples...how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was LEFT drawn up like a bow,
and the beard LEFT on his chin was as white as the snow.
The stump of a pipe he held RIGHT in his teeth,
and the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a round little belly,
that shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly.
He was RIGHT chubby and plump, a RIGHT, RIGHT jolly old elf,
and I laughed when I saw him in spite of myself.
A wink of his LEFT eye and a LEFT twist of his head,
soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.
He spoke not a word, but went RIGHT straight to his work,
and filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk
And laying his finger to the LEFT of his nose,
and giving a nod, he LEFT up the chimney he rose.
He sprang RIGHT to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
and away they all LEFT like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he LEFT--out of sight,

"Happy Christmas to all...and to all a good night!"

  • Strategic Planning Sorry for the recent lack of posts. I have been busy preparing for our annual strategic meeting.

This is a meeting where my husband and I meet with attorneys, accountants and consultants to review our year end. We review our annual goals and set goals for the next year. We monitor progress on our long term goals. We set monthly benchmarks for monitoring small steps for the coming the year.

One exciting change to the administrative systems at WSP is our automated inventory forecasting (the system went live this weekend). Instead of ordering based on dollars sold or past orders, the system automatically looks at past orders and forecasts what we will need for inventory for the next month. It then tell us when to order based on manufacturer lead times.

I have always said that inventory can make or break a company. If you have too little inventory, you can't sell it and lose potential profits. If you have too much inventory, you can quickly become underfunded and go bankrupt. If you carry products that people don't want...it is money wasted....just sitting on the shelf.

Have you set your goals for next year?
