Fragrance Gap Analysis

If you are like most, you tend to have fragrances in your line that you personally prefer. It is natural to purchase what you like. For myself, when reviewing new scents I quickly say "yes" to sweet fruits and fresh/clean cucumber type scents.

The problem with developing a line based on personal preference is that you end up excluding customers that do not have your preferences. Ideally you want a broad line that appeals to many different customers.

WSP's purchasing department recently put all of our fragrances through a Fragrance Oil Gap Analysis. The results showed that we were greatly lacking in three areas. As a result, our last 10 new fragrance oils were designed to filled those three gaps.

If you have customers approach your craft table and can't find a scent they like, maybe it is because their preferences are just a bit different than yours and you have a few gaps in your line.

Attached is the Fragrance Gap Analysis Worksheet we used. I hope it can help you too!

Wishing You Much Success!

Thank you, this is a great idea.

Question: What is Gourmond? And what is considered Oriental?

Wow - that is SO helpful! I am just getting started and tend to skew towards what I like and leave the rest out:)

Wow, that looks like a great way to check over my inventory, thank you for posting that notion. What is "Ozonic"? Do your descriptions of your fragance and essential oils provide these words as quick keys for people to shop with?

That is really great! This is one area I have a very hard time! Thanks!!
Wendy, I would have to assume that Gourmond is 'bakery'. =)

Hey Debbie~thanks so much for the worksheet! I know I have an "earthy" gap. (I can't get the patchouli thing) but one of my key customers LOVES those earthy fo's. It'll be so interesting to see what else I may be missing! (it's certainly not WSP's YUZU~that one's my latest obsession!)

This is such a helpful worksheet. I am glad to have come across it as I know I have a lot of gaps! I know my nose, but I cannot say I know those of my customers. This will help vastly in the long run. Thank you!

Thank you for sharing this worksheet, I wonder how I will do?? I try to offer a wide range but know I definitely have some preferences!!

I have often wished all of WSP's EO's and FO's were listed by categories! When I am looking for an "earthy" scent, I have to scroll through each list and read every description.

Can this be done on the website?

We have tried to list by group but the issue has always been that very few fragrances are one group. They fall in two groups. For example Blueberry Muffin is fruit/gourmand.

I like your suggestion. Maybe we can come up with a way to make a special search engine just for fragrances.

I will put it on our list for after the busy season!

Thanks for the suggestion.
