I received this email today and it put a special smile in my heart. It is humbling to find customers that care enough about my personal journey to take the time to write.
I thank you for this!

A Special Motherhood
With great care and deliberation, God was hovering over earth selecting his parents for children. As he worked, he was instructing an angel to take notes.
He states to the angel, “Beth Armstrong give her a son and Patron Saint Matthew. Marjorie Forest, give her a daughter and Patron Saint Cecilia. Carrie Rutledge, give her twins and Patron saint Gerald. Gerald is use to profanity.”
He pauses at the next name and smiles. “Give this mother a handicapped child.” The angel is curious. “Why this mother? She’s so happy.” God replied, “Exactly, how could I give a handicapped child a mother who doesn’t know laughter? That would be cruel.” The angel asks, “But does she have enough patience?” God relied, “I don’t want her to have too much patience or she will drown in a sea of self-pity and despair.”
“I watched her today. This mother has a strong sense of self and independence. This is necessary. You see, the child I am going to give her has his own world. This mother will have to live in the child’s world, and that’s not going to be easy. This mother is selfish.” The angel gasps, “Selfish, is that a virtue?” God nods yes. “If she can’t separate herself from the child occasionally, she will never survive.”
“Yes, here is a woman whom I will bless with a child less than perfect. She doesn’t know it yet, but she is to be envied. She will never take for granted a spoken word. She will never consider a step ordinary. When her child says, “Momma” for the first time, she will witness a miracle and know it. I will permit her to see clearly the things I see – ignorance, cruelty, prejudice – and allow her to raise above them. She will never be alone. I will be at her side every minute of every day because she is doing my work as surely if she were an angel by my side.”
The angel asks, “Who will be her Patron Saint?”
God smiles, “Give her a mirror….that will suffice.”

What Kind of World
As many of you know, my husband and I have a daughter severely affected by Autism. Just as the movie link below states...we were told to wait. This wait caused us to miss early intervention opportunities. Unfortunately, she was diagnosed at the late age of 7. Recently, she has made some exciting progress with a machine called a DynaVox. We call it her "Talker". I live for the day she pushes the button to say "Mommy I Love You".A dear friend of mine, Sherri, sent me a video called Change Her World on the site What Kind of World Do You Want.
Please watch Change Her World. For every video view the band Five for Fighting will donate .49 to Autism Speaks.org. You donate by just watching...nothing more.

The National Candle Association recently sent out an alert/advisory for lotion candles.
Listing ingredients and identifying skin safe fragrance loads is common for our personal care customers but it may be new to some candle customers.

Delta Plastics
WSP has done business with Delta Plastics since 1999. I am writing this post, in response to many emails and questions.
As you may have noticed, we have been long out of stock on many, many popular Delta products .
In the fourth quarter of 2007, Delta Plastics was purchased by a company named Rexam. Immediately after the purchase, our orders ran smoothly....but that quickly began to decline. Lead times became outrageous. We were told false information by the new sales staff. Phone calls took over a week to be returned. Minimum orders were more than tripled. Prices have went up....5 times since December 1st!
Due to all of this, I have made the decision that Rexam Delta will not be able to service our account in the manner that we expect. Therefore, we sourced alternative sources for our double wall jars as well as straight and dome lids. I am happy to report that I found a company that has been in the US market for years and has displayed the excellent quality and customer service. I expect that most of our out of stock products will return to stock by the end of February.

IGI Wax Increases
In answer many of your emails and phone calls....
We contacted IGI to verify the status of our current price list. They did confirm that there will be a "SUBSTANTIAL" price increase in the first quarter of 2008. They were not able to provide us with the exact date or the amount of notice that will be provided.
The last time there was a "SUBSTANTIAL" increase it was between 3 and 10 cents a pound (depending on the wax formula). We did absorb part of the last increase but will be unable to absorb the increase this time.
I wish I had more news. I hope this helps answer some of your questions.

Changes in Portion Sizes

I found an NIH site that shows how portion sizes and related calories have changed over the past 20 years. The site has several examples.
In the two pictures displayed, the "20 year old standard" turkey sandwich on the left has 320 calories. The "current" turkey sandwich on the right has 820 calories.
Is bigger better?

New Year's Resolutions
The start of a New Year means different things to different people. For me it is a time for both personal and professional reflection. It is a time to set New Year's Resolutions.
Professional Resolutions are the easiest. WSP gathers data throughout the year and has historical data going back to 2001. It is just a matter of processing this information and electing steps to take in the New Year. To me it is fun ...to layout a plan and then watch it fall together throughout the year. I have very definite opinions of how I want to see the company evolve and where I would like to see the industry progress.
On the other hand, Personal Resolutions are the hardest. Perhaps it is my long gone (but never forgotten) nursing background but I find it much easier to care for WSP, her customers, two busy kids and very special daughter with special needs. So many times, the day is done and I am so mentally exhausted that there is no more time for myself. In 2008 this will no longer be an acceptable excuse!
Therefore, I have set three personal resolutions for the New Year. They are:
Some of these resolutions are easier than others. Breaking habits and changing is going to be the hardest. This is my plan:

So many times, the day is done and I am so mentally exhausted that there is no more time for myself. In 2008 this will no longer be an acceptable excuse!
Therefore, I have set three personal resolutions for the New Year. They are:
- To allow for more personal time by lightening my workload.
- To show family how special they are to my life.
- To lose 50 pounds.
Some of these resolutions are easier than others. Breaking habits and changing is going to be the hardest. This is my plan:
Personal Actions for Resolution 1 -
- I am currently active on 5 different corporate boards. By February 1st, I am going to resign from two of my obligations and only sit on three. This should free at least 20 hours from my month...time I can spend with my husband and kids.
- I am going to hire a person(s) to work on specific marketing projects for WSP.
Note: If you are seeking some work from home, are task driven, creative, a customer of WSP, and are proficient in Microsoft Power Point...email me so we can talk about these marketing projects! debbie@wholesalesuppliesplus.com
Personal Actions for Resolution 2 -
- Use ProFlowers.com to send a small gift and/or card to family members. I chose this site because it has a free reminder service. I plugged each birthday and address into the online tool and it will email me 2 weeks before the birthday date. The prices seem pretty good and I like that they have more than just flowers. I am confident this will work for me.
- Make an effort to have a monthly visit or have dinner with my grandmother who is 86 years old. At the very least, call her once a week.
Personal Actions for Resolution 3 -
- Use MyFoodDiary.com to lose weight. I chose this site because I love my food...my wine...and my life. I don't want to eat low calorie box food and I don't want to give up Friday night date/dinner night with my husband. Their online tool lets you record everything you eat. It then displays the calories and nutritional breakdown for the day. It makes suggestions for selection improvements. The idea is that radical changes and fad diets don't work. Instead education and lifestyle changes yield long term results. The site costs just under $10/month.
- Walk outside or ride a stationary bike for 30 minutes a day - 5 days a week.

Business 80-20 Rule
The 80-20 Rule of Thumb (aka Pereto Principal) in business refers to the concept that 80% of revenue comes from 20% of customers.
Have you identified your 20% customers? Do you know why they buy and what they buy? If you are looking to grow your business...answers to these questions are a great place to start!

Cosmetic Colors
Color your product and you color the world! Customers respond best to a color that matches a fragrance.Wholesale Supplies Plus stocks many different cosmetic colors. Below is a quick list of color definitions.
Dyes – Organic Water Soluble Colors. Dyes produce a color that is very clear and sometimes called “Stained Glass”. Powder Dyes are very concentrated. The liquid dyes and solid dye bars are most easily blended to make unique colors. Cosmetic dyes are only produced and inspected by the FDA during certain months of the year. It is very important that you do not use candle dye in skincare applications. When the FDA approves a color for cosmetic use, you are assured that it does not contain heavy metals that can be toxic if absorbed into the human body. Most commonly used in skincare products and mp soap. Dyes may change color in cp or hp soap. Wholesale Supplies Plus stocks a full line of oil based dyes just for oil based products.
Oxide Pigments – Pigments can be organic or inorganic. The are made to be water soluble or oil soluble. We stock both because they are needed for different applications. Pigments do not fully dissolve and therefore, cannot produce a “stained glass” clear color, instead they suspend or disperse in a formula to produce color. Powder pigments are most commonly used in cp and hp soap. Powder pigments will clump in mp soap therefore, liquid pigments are used. Liquid pigments will cloud mp soap but will also not migrate in layered mp soap.
Mica & Sparkles (Not Glitter) – These colors can be soluble in water or oil. They are actually a combination of ingredients that make the color. This combination can be dye, pigment, bismuth oxychloride, and/or titanium dioxide. Micas are most commonly used in clear mp soap because they require light to reflect the sparkle....the clear soap allows that light to enter the base. Wholesale Supplies Plus carries mica powder, mica color blocks and liquid micas.
Ultra Marines – Ultra marine colors are inorganic pigment that must be used in a product such as soap because it has a pH of over 7.5. If used in lotions or low pH products, it will produce a foul odor. Ultra Marines will cloud mp soap but will also not migrate in layered mp soap. Wholesale Supplies Plus stocks ultra marines on their pigment pages. These include Ultra Marine Powders and Ultra Marine Liquids.
Not sure which color is best for your product?
Here is a general guide:
CP and HP Soap - Pigments, Ultra Marines
MP Soap - Dyes, Mica, Pigments
Liquid Washes - Dyes, Mica
Lotions - Dyes
Foaming Bath Whip - Dyes
Salts - Dyes, Mica
Lip Products - Dyes for Oil
Oil based Scrubs - Dyes for Oil
I highly recommend the FDA website regarding color additives.
Wishing You Much Success!

Price Increases
Now that we are back into the regular swing of business, we are being hit....sometimes hourly....with price increases from almost all of our manufacturers. As of yesterday, we were given over 25 "effective immediately" increases.
One of the most disappointing increases came yesterday from our Soy Candle Wax manufacturer. There was a 10% effective immediately increase. To compound our disappointment with this particular product line, future soy wax costs will be based on commodity soybeans prices. Due to the demand of soybeans as alternative fuels, we have been warned that the price for soy wax will likely continue to go up with future orders.
Late yesterday, the purchasing department forwarded many glass price increase to me. Many are very, very significant. I will evaluate these today and make adjustments as needed.
Our MP Soap Base manufacturer has also forwarded increases that will be evaluated today.
At this point, my best advice is if you are considering an order....place it sooner than later. We will be adjusting our prices as our costs increase and unfortunately, we will not have the luxury of giving advanced notice. Hopefully, most product lines will price stabilize by the end of the month.
I wish there was better news.

From Hobby to Business
Are you thinking of turning your hobby into a business? This is a reprint from an article I published years ago. I hope it provides confidence and inspiration.
Getting Started
Starting a business is exciting and exhausting. It is important to pace yourself so that you do not get burned out. Try out several crafts and make sure the one you choose to turn into a business....is one you love! You need to have a passion for the craft and really believe in what you are making. During the busy season (generally the holidays) you will live and breath your craft. You must like it enough to want to spend hours at a time with it.
It is also important that you choose a craft that the public will purchase. Once you feel you are ready to sell your craft, show your finished product to family and friends. Don't tell them that you are thinking of starting a business. Watch their expressions. Do they seem enthused? Ask their opinion of the product and what they might improve. Ask them if they have ever seen anything like this before. Casually ask them the reasons they like the product. All of this is unofficial market research.
Accounting
Start a business by first speaking with an accountant. Your account can recommend how to register your business in your state. He or she will help you get a federal tax id number and a state vendors certificate. You will want to open a business banking account just for your business.
I highly recommend Quick Books. It is very easy to learn and commonly used by accountants. It will allow you to track sales and expenses. Quick Books has live help and message boards. When it comes time to do your taxes, you can make an accountants copy for your accountant. Good record keeping can save you an incredible about of time and money. It is important to keep all paper receipts and records for a minimum of 7 years.
Budget
It is important to set a monthly and annual budget. One of the biggest pitfalls a person can encounter is becoming financially overextended. Set a budget and stick to it. This will increase your chances of financial success. If you are married, it will also help with household harmony. If you are married, set your budget with your spouse. Determine how much of your weekly or monthly profit will go into additional inventory and how much you will keep as a paycheck.
Goal Setting
Perhaps your goal for the first six months is to make gift soap for your family and friends. This will afford you time to perfect your craft. Your next goal may then be to enter one or two craft shows. Your goals should be set with your budget in mind. Don't be too ambitious. It is better to grow slowly. Companies that grow too quickly often become financially strained.

Pricing Products
Many people make the mistake of setting their prices after they have determined how much money they want to make. This is a grave mistake. First, determine how much your craft will sell for in a retail store. Keep in mind you want to price your product to sell. This will often vary region to region. Check out local stores and the prices of items like yours. Ask the clerk if the product is selling and why or why not. Try to figure out if stores have to run specials to get the product to sell. Once you have determined the retail price, divide that number in half. This is considered to be your wholesale price. Craft show prices are usually somewhere between retail and wholesale.
The typical retail price for MP Soap is $1.00 per ounce. People love specials...consider a special like (3) four ounce bars for $10.
Profit Margins
Profit margins are a little tricky because many people do not recognize that profit is always less when you are starting out. You are unable to take advantage of buying in bulk because you do not have established customers. Also, you are not able to take advantage of mass production.
To illustrate the advantages of mass production, consider this example: A bar of soap retails for $4.00 and wholesales for $2.00. The typical net profit on a bar of soap sold wholesale is $1.00 per bar. If you are just starting out you will likely make 50 bars in 4 hours. If you sell all of this soap, your work pays you about $15.25/hour. On the other hand, it is not uncommon for an established business to make 2,500 bars in about 30 hours. This pays you about $124.35/hour.
This is a considerable difference...but a realistic example on how hard work and mass production increases profits.
Special Considerations
* Invest in quality soap molds. A quality mold will last a very long time.
* Shipping costs will vary greatly, depending on where you live. Wholesale Supplies Plus has several discount programs to save on shipping....you can ask about them by calling 1-800-359-0944.
* When possible, take advantage of product savings programs.
* If you are starting your own business, don't plan on entering into a get rich quick project. It takes lots of hard work and dedication. If you don't work....you don't make money. If you are planning on hiring help so that you do not need to work long hours, it will come off of your profits.
* Smile, take a deep breath, and have fun! I can personally tell you that starting a craft business is one of the most rewarding things I have ever done.
