What would you do?
Cleveland has some of the highest foreclosure rates in all of the country. We have a neighbor that unfortunately lost their house to foreclosure. The house went up for Sherrif's Sale in January and Countrywide Bank bought the house as part of their REO program. When the bank took possession of the deed, the old owners were evicted.
Yesterday I was speaking with a different neighbor and it turns out the bank never changed the locks on this home. The old owners went into the house and removed the basement carpet, appliances and who knows what else. The reason I know this is because this woman had the nerve to go door to door asking people to watch her kids while she and her new boyfriend removed the items!
I am sooooo bothered by this. Is it any different that going to an empty home that is for sale and taking their stuff? It just seems wrong. I keep thinking....what is next...copper pipes?
The thing that throws me is that I am the only neighbor that is speaking up and sees this as stealing. Everyone else just wants to ignore that it happened.
What would you do? Call the police, the bank, ignore the situation?

Soap Guild Convention
I am headed to VT for the Soap Guild Convention that starts tonight. I am teaching six sessions on four topics. In summary they are:

Our new videographer is already working on videos for those that could not attend the event.

Epsom Salt - Facts
Have you ever take a bath in Epsom Salt and noticed your legs float?
If so, it likely means you a good amount of Epsom Salt in your bath. Epsom Salt is made of Magnesium Sulfate. Magnesium Sulfate raises the water's specific gravity, making the body more buoyant.
Have you noticed you wrinkle less in an Epsom Salt Bath?

IGI Wax Increase
Late today I was disappointed to received an IGI Wax increase notification letter. For the blends we stock, price increases are 2-18%, depending on the blend.
I spoke with management at IGI and as I expected the dramatic increases are due to increases in the oil and soy markets. They do not see prices coming down.
I will be passing the increase on to our website sometime tomorrow. I am sorry for not having more notice...we did not receive much ourselves.

BPA Plastic Problems
BPA stands for Bisphenol-A. It is a chemical in some polycarbonate plastics. Scientists have recently linked BPA to synthetic estrogen and they say the chemical can alter cell behavior at very low levels. BPA is now thought to cause early puberty, obesity, diabetes, breast cancer, hyperactivity and impaired immune function.
As we wash polycarbonates in hot water or heat them in the microwave, BPA leaches into into the product the container contains. The hotter the liquid in a container, the more BPA can leach. The older the container, the more BPA can leach.

Autism & Alternative Medicine
I ran into Patti, a neighbor, at a party a few weeks ago. She told me about her son that was diagnosed with a terrible lung condition similar to Cystic Fibrosis. She said they gave him no hope for cure and limited hope for living any sort of a normal life. She prayed for an answer and through research was directed to “Dr. Cheryl”.
Dr. Cheryl is a board certified family practice doctor that has a special interest in alternative medicine as it relates to allergy treatment. After a year of seeing Dr. Cheryl and participating in holistic therapies, her son is cured….even her specialists have agreed it is an amazing change.
In speaking with Patti, she told me that Dr. Cheryl successfully treats many children with autism. She encouraged me to visit Dr. Cheryl and ask questions. She told me that parents and their children affected by autism, travel from 22 different states to visit Dr. Cheryl. We are quite lucky because she is only 2 miles away!
I called to make an appointment and spoke with a wonderful older man. He stated that Dr. Cheryl has treated his grandson for the past year. His grandson did not speak before treatment and now speaks 5 word sentences. He went on to tell me that he believes so much in Dr. Cheryl that he drives 3 hours, twice a week to volunteer in her clinic.
I asked about these alternative therapies. He talked to me about treating an over growth of yeast in the gut, a special lotion that removes metals from the body, as well as others. He referred me to the site Generation Rescue for information.
With feelings of caution and fear of another disappointment, I made an appointment for my daughter in mid May.
Even as I write this, my mind dances with the “what if” she may be able to speak even one word. As a mother, I owe her….no stone can be unturned.

Fragrance Update
I am happy to announce our all of our skincare scents have been reviewed for phthalate content. Results are noted in each individual scent description.
Today we approved the following "phthalate free" reworks for fragrances that contained phthalates. We have place the phthalate containing versions on sale at $10.00/lb. Once they are gone, we will replace them with the phthalate free versions. They are:
Deluxe Vanilla, Fresh Linen, First Rain, Chamomile Fragrance, Green Apple, Mulberry, Purely Peppermint, Vanilla Cream. I have listed all of the scents on a closeout special page.
Scents that do contain phthalate but we do not yet have an acceptable rework are:
Angel Type, Apricot Freesia, Bay Rum, Blueberry Muffin, Dream Angel Type, Enchanted Apple Type, Fresh Brewed Coffee, Gingerbread Cookie, Halo Type, Lemon Verbena Mint, Lemongrass Sage, O'Christmas Tree, Pumpkin Crunch, Relaxation, Sandalwood Fragrance, Sands of Morocco, Satin Sheets, Spring Rain, Straight Strawberry, Sweet Juicy Pear, Teakwood, Tuberose, Vanilla Bean (Not Vanilla Bean Noel)
Reworking formulas can take time. I have been assured that we are on track to have a skincare fragrance and essential oils phthalate free by July 1st.

Cosmetic Colors
In the past year, there have been tremendous changes in the cosmetic color industry. I am referring to the very large companies that actually produce colors for the entire industry.
Some companies have gone out of business while others have merged with others. Looking over our producers, not one is the same as when we entered the industry 10 years ago.
Unfortunately, some wonderful colors that we carried for years are no longer being produced and thus we cannot offer them.
In the past twelve months, our costs have doubled and sometimes tripled. The last price increase has caused me to take a look at our color line and make some hard decisions. You will find the following by the end of business today:
Prices on the website will have been increased on all cosmetic colors.
Discontinued colors are on a special liquidation page.
Colors now organized by Powders, Liquids and Color Bars.

Cell Phone Theft
Last January, my daughter received a cell phone for her 13th birthday. Three weeks ago she "lost the phone". I was mad but figured it would show up in time.
This past week she brought home her first report card with straight A's. I figured now was a good time to replace the phone....it had been three weeks and frankly I had this feeling in the pit of my stomach that as soon as I got the new phone...the old one would show up.
Sure enough...after about 5 minutes of activating the new phone, she started to get unusual text messages. To make a long story short...it turns out that a fellow teammate on her club volleyball team stole the phone from her gym bag.
My daughter was devastated, I was furious, and my husband (who has coached school sports for 20 years) stayed calm to call the girl's mom. After a very long week, we ended up getting the phone back......the battery missing, the serial numbers scratched off and a password that cannot be reset without the serial number. After the anger eases, I think to check my phone bill. Only to find that in three weeks this girl had 2,700 text messages, 64 pictures and 300 voice minutes. All of this plus the value of the phone totalled over $1,000.
Verizon told me I needed to file a police report to get charges removed from my bill.
So yesterday I took my daughter to the police station to file the police report. It turns out the value of this theft makes it a felony. If I filed a report, they would immediately arrest this girl, place her in a juvenile jail for 3-5 days and have a court hearing for her to be released to her mother. The police encouraged me to find another solution. I walked away confused.
I just want my daughter to play volleyball (a sport she loves). I don't want any part of determining this other girls future. I don't want to be the person to teach her a lesson...isn't that her mother's job? Of course, the infamous...why me?
Last night, I was laying in bed trying to think of a lesson I could bring to my daughter in all of this. This girl is still on the club volleyball team and my daughter has to play and work out with her about 12 hours a week. The mom is a single mom and cannot afford to pay restitution. This girl was not one bit remorseful at Saturday's tournament. She did not apologize to the team as she had promised to do. I cannot think of one single lesson to point out to my daughter.
Then my daughter wanted to talk...and we did. I asked her, "what lesson do you think we have learned." She replied...
"Lying only leads to lying. Not telling the truth only digs your hole deeper. An honest person is the way I want to live my life."
I kissed her good night and realized maybe I am doing a good job as a mother.

Fragrance Pthalate Update
We have gotten about 2/3 of our fragrances analyzed and the website updated. We are only waiting on some of our Premium Scent results. Using these links, you can view the Economy and Standard scents.
I expect to have the entire process completed by June 1st. I have mandated that Wholesale Supplies Plus scents to be 100% phthalate free by July 1st.
Several fragrance formulas have come back containing phthalates. The website does note this under the individual fragrance description.
For those containing phthalates, we are reformulating them to be phthalate free. As a scent is reformulated, we are placing the version containing phthalates it on our closeout page at a sale price of 50% off 1 lb. pricing. Those added today:

Debbie's Strawberry Souffle
My 13 year old daughter instantly fell in love with this recipe. Fun twist on a great recipe!
Debbie's Strawberry Souffle Scrub
8 oz Crafter's Choice Foaming Bath Whip
4 oz Coarse White Sugar
1 Tbsp Colored Cookie Sugar
2 Tbsp Crafter's Choice Sweet Almond Oil
2 tsp Crafter's Choice Strawberries & Cream FO
1/2 tsp Crafter's Choice Vitamin E Oil
In a Pyrex Cup and using an electric hand mixer, whip 4 oz of the Foaming Bath Whip for 1 minute. Gently fold 2 oz sugar and 1/2 of liquid ingredients and all of color into whip. Whip entire mixture again for 1 minute thoroughly. Set aside.
Repeat process but do not add color. Layer different colors into jar. Sprinkle top with colored sugar. Apply lid and label.

This scrub has quickly become a favorite of staff and visiting customers. It cleanses the skin well and has a great after feel.

8 oz Crafter's Choice Foaming Bath Whip
4 oz Coarse Demerara Brown Sugar
1 Tbsp Coarse Demerara Brown Sugar
2 Tbsp Crafter's Choice Sweet Almond Oil
2 tsp Crafter's Choice Brown Sugar FO
1/2 tsp Crafter's Choice Vitamin E Oil

Flavor Fragrances
Our new Crafter's Choice Super Sweet (All Natural Sweetener) is an additive that gives lip products that super sweet, gooey flavor. Although expensive, customers are telling us that the Super Sweet has been selling point that drives customers to buy.
Given the popularity of this new additive, I have had the "less than spectacular" sweetener removed from all of our flavor fragrances.
