Fragrance Trends - Fall 2008

Wholesale Supplies Plus closely follows fragrance trends and tries to bring those trends to customers.

For the past several years, professionally published fragrance trend reports have not been terribly accurate for our industry.  Last year "destination fragrances" were suppose to be all the rage.  Examples:   Mediterranean Fig, Caribbean Rains and Haitian Vanillas.  They did not perform well.  In fact, I recently noticed that Yankee Candle had all of their destination scents on closeout.

For those seeking 2008 fragrance trends, I feel best about giving you my personal observations.  These are based on customer feedback and sales. 

Personal Care:  Ambers, Fruits and Florals. 

Bakery scents are crossing over from candles.  

Candles:  Natural aromas that compliment natural soy wax.

Examples Include:

Ambers:  Blackberry Amber, Sexy Sandalwood, Citrus & Amber

Fruits:  Black Raspberry Vanilla, Midnight Pomegranate, Georgia Peach

Florals:  Cotton Blossom, Jasmine Vanilla, Red Currant & Thyme

Bakery:  Pumpkin Crunch, Lemon Sugar, Creme Brulee

Natural Aromas:  Essential Oil Blends

Color Trends - Fall 2008

There are many, many sites on the Internet that talk about color trends for fall 2008.   Most follow the textile and fashion industries.  A Google search produces most of the free sites.

I know that when I buy products for my home (soaps, lotions, candles) I need to love the scent and then I want the product to look good in the room.  When I make products, I generally need to like what I am crafting.

Sherwin Williams has a great tool that not only outlines the 2008 color trends but it also has a free quiz that allows you to discover your 2008 style preference.

Candle Wax Update

Our website reflects the most recent IGI Wax increase. All waxes experienced a price increase.

I have elected to discontinue 2 IGI Waxes. Both have been placed on sale to facilitate movement. They are:

IGI 1260
IGI 4794

Recommended replacements for these waxes:

IGI 4794 -> IGI 4641 or 4625
IGI 1260 -> IGI 4625 (add stearic for higher melt point)

With regard to soy wax prices, the price is very unstable due to the recent rains and flooding. If farmers choose to replant lost corn crops, soy prices will likely go up. If the farmers decide to not replant corn and to plant extra soy crops, the price of soy wax will go likely go down. I am told that there will be a public announcement with the farmers plans on June 30th. I will update you as I am updated.

French Milling Soap

Customer Question:

How do I French Mill Soap?

Rebatching, or hand milling, is a soapmaking technique used by hobbyists and artisan soapmakers. The commercial equivalent is French milling.

In rebatching, previously made cold process soap is shredded or diced finely and mixed with a liquid, into which the soap shreds begin to dissolve. It is then heated at a fairly low temperature until the mass is more or less homogeneous. When it becomes translucent and reaches a thick, gel-like consistency, it is spooned or piped into molds and allowed to harden.

Soapmakers frequently use rebatching as a way of adding substances that could not withstand the high temperatures or caustic chemical environment of cold process or hot process soapmaking, such as certain essential oils (for example, those with a very low flash point). The choice of liquid affects the character of the finished soap; milk is frequently used to give the soap a smooth, creamy consistency. Rebatching can also be used as a way of salvaging soap that cracked, curdled or separated while being made.  Triple milled soaps are often considered some of the finest true soaps in the market.

By definition of the process and creation of the "gel state", adding to a "liquid" and "rebatching", french milling cannot be physically accomplished with melt and pour soap.  Calling melt and pour soap "french milled" is a deceptive marketing technique that I would not recommend.

When you place an item in your WSP Personal Shopping List, the item is stored on our servers. The items will stay in your list until you delete them.

When you are shopping and place an item in the shopping cart, this item is held on your computer hard drive with a "cookie". In the checkout process, it moves from your hard drive to our computer servers and we fill your order as directed.

If you are trying to add items to your cart and they are not showing up, you need to reset your computer cookies. I find that computer updates and anti-viral software updates sometimes change your cookie settings. That is why cookies can work well and then all of a sudden not work.

Foaming Bottle Sets

We are going to now sell the foamer top separately from the bottle. This will allow us to offer the bottle in additional colors. It also allows us to introduce a natural foamer.

The bottle is called a Table Top Bottle. Look for it to arrive for regular stock in Clear, Amber, Blue and Green. Pictures will not be on the website until product arrives into our building. We have the Clear Table Top Bottles now.

For those that are working on fall lines and catalogs, this early notification is intended to help you.

I especially like the colored foamers. It solves the problem of clouding or off color foaming base. Marketing ideas....

IGI Wax Increase

At the end of business today my purchasing manager informed me that she received a letter stating that IGI is having another price increase on candle wax.

Due to the timing of our next truck of wax, this increase will be added to our pending order with IGI. Therefore, the increase will be passed on to our website one week from today.

Candle wax is loosely related to the cost of crude oil. As many analysis are predicting, crude oil is only going to go up through the end of the year. It is simple supply and demand. If candle wax is a staple to your product line, you will likely see additional increases this year.

Today I made changes to our Packaging Catalog.

The changes are specific to the way bottles and jars are organized. This change is in preparation to new products that will be arriving in the next 2-8 weeks.

Road Work

The good news is that the neighborhood across the street is getting some storm water drainage improvements. It is refreshing to see tax dollars put to good use.

The bad news is the road in front of our building is a mess. Work is expected to take another two days.

Walk for the Cure

I was asked to support a local Walk for the Cure.

Instead of writing a check, my 13 year old daughter and I decided to make gift sets that could be sold at the walk.

We had so much fun last Saturday making these sets. We came to the office, turned up the music and went to work. Before we knew it...midnight came and we were done. I got the biggest kick when my she said to me, "you know I might be kinda good at making this stuff." My eyes sparkled as I thought of all I could teach her.

We made 50 sets that will sell for $15 each. Included in each:
