Important Fragrance Oil Information

Important Fragrance Oil Information

Fragrance oils contain multiple raw materials that make up the aromatic character of the oil.

Each year the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) generates and releases amended safety reports for raw material used to manufacture fragrance oils. These reports are based on scientific research conducted by independent scientists in the previous year.

Once IFRA releases their annual amendments, a participating manufacturer has two years to comply with the changes.

Wholesale Supplies Plus has chosen to be the first online distributor of fragrance oils to take a pledge to annually review each of our fragrance formulas for IFRA compliance. We pledge to do this within 1 month of receiving annually amended reports. Additionally, we will openly update and report online the maximum use level for every fragrance sold.

Currently, our site has been updated to comply with IFRA's 2008 reports. The 2009 amendments are expected to be released in August 2009. Click Here to view individual fragrances.

It should be noted that the IFRA guidelines apply to skin and environmental safety. They do not give a guideline for how the fragrance will perform in a product. This means that you need to continue to test your formula for desired performance.

I know that this information is very new to the craft and artisan industries. No longer do the general guidelines of 3% in soap and 1% in lotion apply. What matters are the safety reports for the ingredients in the formula.

You should note that each year new research becomes available and IFRA amendments are made. Overtime, maximum use rates may change. For example, five years ago a fragrance oil may have had a 5% maximum use level for bar soap and today it might only have a 0.5% maximum use level. This is because current research supports the change.

Regarding the maximum use level of essential oils, we are working hard with our essential oil, essential oil blend and flavor importers to release IFRA statements. As of today, they are cooperating. It will just take time for them to forward us the information.

This is a very important topic and one that I hope you take seriously. It is my sincere desire that all people are fully informed as to the raw materials they use to produce products. Our industry has a wonderful reputation and this is one more step in ensuring that you produce the safest products on the market.
